After falling in the district championship, Liberty High School sophomore Tayler Conway won four matches following that loss to Mercer Island’s Caitlyn Ying at Lower Woodland Park.
In a rematch a week later, with a bit more on the line, Conway defeated Ying in straight sets to win her the 3A singles state championship.
Conway completed the fabled journey of losing the district championship to beat the same player in the championship as was done to her last season.
Last season in her freshman year, Conway won the district championship over Amina Avdic from Lake Washington. Avdic then went on to beat Conway in the state championship in straight sets.
This year in state, Conway was a whole different animal. Conway won her first match 6-0, 6-0 over Madison Orr from University. Anya Moravek won five games against Conway over two sets, but the Liberty sophomore weathered the storm to win 6-3, 6-2 and advanced to the second day.
In the semifinals, all four players were from KingCo: Caitlyn Ying, Chole Han, Ruth Sun and Conway.
Conway had her fair share of battles against all of them, but Sun posed a tough challenge. Sun was the only player to win a set against Conway in the state tournament.
Sun won the first set 6-3, but Conway won the second 6-2 and the third set 6-2 as well, sending her to the championship match against Ying.
The Liberty sophomore got her revenge from the loss in the district championship and won the state title 6-3, 6-3.
