Remember, fireworks are still banned in Renton

Instead of a fireworks show, the city will host a drone show July 25.

For 20 years, the sale and use of fireworks has been prohibited in the Renton city limits.

The fireworks ban was put into place by Renton residents in May 2005 and is a year-round ban on the personal discharge of fireworks. The ban is meant to limit fireworks-related injuries and property damage. A similar ban is also in effect in unincorporated King County, which includes the Skyway and Fairwood neighborhoods.

The city said citations may be issued for violations, and violators are subject to civil and criminal penalties. Also, the sale, possession, or use of explosive devices such as M-80s, M-100s, and homemade or modified fireworks is a felony offense and violators will face criminal charges.

Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park will not be hosting a fireworks display, and use of fireworks is also prohibited at the park for Independence Day. The park will close at 7 p.m. July 4. The city has shifted to a drone show held during Renton River Days at 9:30 p.m. July 25 at the park.

To report the prohibited use of fireworks, the Renton Police Department asks for residents to call the non-emergency number at 425-235-2121.

Reports of fireworks in unincorporated King County can be made at their non-emergency number, 206-296-3311.

Code enforcement for King County will not investigate any complaint for fireworks incidents on private property that do not include a specific address located within King County.

With drier conditions, brush fires and wildfires are at a greater risk this year, especially in the wildland urban interface, the lands where housing meets up against forests and other natural areas. Last year, fireworks started a brush fire near the Heritage Hills Apartments that resulted in flames within feet of the building, according to the Renton Police Department.

Local fire authority officials said the best way to protect a home against the risk of stray fireworks causing a fire on a property is to use a sprinkler system to dampen the grass and landscape around the home.
